Chinese character dui

3578/20992

对 (duì) is the Chinese character for “right” or “correct”; inside a sentence it can also mean “to,” “toward,” or “a pair.” As a bare Mandarin reply, it confirms what you just said. Read the whole phrase: 对不起 means “sorry,” not agreement.

What 对 means

“Correct” in a reply; other meanings depend on the phrase. Its pinyin, the standard Latin spelling of Mandarin sounds, is duì, often typed dui or dui4.

Look at what follows 对. Before a person or topic, it aims an action or attitude at them; 对着 means facing or pointing toward something; 一对 counts a pair. Translating every 对 as “yes” will trip you up.

Is 对 a yes?

Usually, when it confirms something you just said. After “So we're meeting tomorrow,” a bare 对 reads as “That's right.” It confirms that statement; it is not a yes that fits every question.

A short 对 doesn't reveal whether the sender is delighted or impatient. It can also just acknowledge a point or move the chat along. If you need a commitment, ask for one.

Is 对 Chinese or Japanese?

对 is simplified Chinese; Japanese normally uses 対. Traditional Chinese uses 對. Pick the form that matches your text's language; switching fonts won't convert one into another.

The link is historical, not just visual. Ancestors of 對 appear in oracle-bone and Western Zhou bronze inscriptions, the oldest surviving Chinese writing; those finds don't date the simplified 对. Traditional dictionaries tie the character to answering or responding, but its original picture remains disputed.

Japanese 対 has its own readings: つい (tsui) for a matching pair, たい (tai) for “versus” or “against.” The Mandarin standalone “right!” doesn't carry over into Japanese.

A bare 对 is a plain Mandarin confirmation, not an expression of enthusiasm.

For an apology, use 对不起; 对 alone reads as “right.”

Questions people ask

1

Why does 对 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
