What 尙 means
尙 and 尚 are one character family, not two meanings. Taiwan's Ministry of Education lists 尚 as standard and 尙 as variant; the shared word runs from upward and toward to esteem, hope, and still/yet.
The related graph appears in Zhouyuan oracle-bone material and Western Zhou bronzes, then shifts through Warring States and later scripts. It worked as writing, not decoration, and survives inside 常, 堂, 掌, and 賞.
As of 2026, CJK fonts can draw the same code point in regional styles. That small top-stroke wobble is font design, not a new character.
