What 峁 means
It is narrower than the general word “hill.” In northwestern Chinese usage, 峁 names a rounded, steep-sided rise made of loess, fine soil deposited by wind.
A regional gazetteer (a local book of places and history) uses 峁 in a place name in 1671; this is an attested use, not the character’s origin.
The older Chinese character dictionary 康熙字典 gives a broader gloss, “the appearance of a high mountain.”

Questions people ask
1Why does 峁 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
