What 峩 means
A lofty or steep mountain. 山 carries the mountain sense; 我 carries the sound. The character exists for that towering-mountain reading.
Shuowen Jiezi (25–220) attests the family; Guangyun later records 峩 as handwritten. The change is shape, not meaning.
Why use 峩 instead of 峨?
To preserve a variant spelling.
峩 stacks 山 above 我; 峨 puts them side by side. Japanese references list 峩 as 峨's variant. As of 2026, 峨 is preferred for ordinary text.
Historical and marked: a variant, not everyday text.
In casual chat it may look like a typo; use 峨.

1Why does 峩 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
