What 峷 means
It names a mound-associated legendary being in a classical Chinese text.
The Zhuangzi is an old Chinese philosophical work. In its chapter “Understanding Life,” a courtier lists beings linked to water, mounds, mountains, wilderness, and marshes; 峷 belongs to the mound. Duke Huan says he has seen a ghost and falls ill. A courtier names local spirits, and the Duke laughs when one description matches his sighting.
Is 峷 a spirit or a beast?
“Legendary being” covers both readings.
Classical commentary calls it a spirit name (神名), while a dictionary gloss calls it a legendary beast and preserves a correction to that reading. The mound line also appears with 峷, 莘, or 崒 across textual witnesses; 莘 and 崒 are variants in the text tradition, not font substitutions.
How do I type 峷?
Use Mandarin Pinyin, Wubi, or Cangjie input.
For Mandarin Pinyin input, type shēn or shen and choose 峷. Wubi uses MUJ; Cangjie uses UYTJ, with the component sequence 山卜廿十. A phonetic IME may hide this rare character among common results.
Literary and reference-like; the story supplies the context that makes the name meaningful.
