Chinese character 崁

In Mandarin, it names a cliff or steep river bank. 崁 can refer to a cliff, steep bank, or raised river terrace, and is especially common in place names. A message containing it by itself is more likely referring to a place or terrain than expressing a mood.

Taiwanese place names give a dated trail: a Dutch record from 1644 writes the area later known as 南崁 as Lamcam; the 1684 臺灣府志, a local gazetteer of places and administration, records 南崁. A 2024 entry in the official character-variant dictionary notes that 崁 is absent from 說文, an early Chinese dictionary. These are records of use, not a date for the character’s origin.

Why does 崁 also mean “hide” in Taiwanese?

Taiwanese Hokkien uses it in words about covering or concealment. Taiwanese Hokkien, also called Taigi, uses 崁 in terms for a lid or covering. In 掩崁 it means to conceal; 暗崁 can mean keeping a benefit or good thing hidden. This differs from the terrain sense found in Mandarin place names, so the surrounding language and word matter.

Is 崁 the same as 嵌?

A variant listing does not make every spelling interchangeable. Some community-edited dictionaries list 嵌 as a variant of 崁. The recorded Taiwanese place name 南崁 is written with 崁, so follow the spelling used in the specific name.
