What 崯 means
崯 means high, steep or rugged mountain terrain. In classical Chinese, it is a mountain character; Mandarin reads it yín, roughly like “yeen” with a rising tone.
In the Han-era dictionary Shuowen Jiezi, an early guide to Chinese characters, 崟 is explained with 山 for the mountain sense and 金 for the sound. The poet Sima Xiangru's Han-era fu, a long descriptive poem, 《子虚赋》, uses 岑崟 for uneven peaks that block the sun. A later dictionary, Jiyun (《集韵》), lists 崯 as a variant of 崟.
Tang-era poetry uses 岑崟 for towering hills; related forms such as 崯崯 and 嶜崟 describe high, pointed, uneven terrain.
Why does 崯 look different in Japanese fonts?
A font can change the drawn form without changing the character. Fonts used for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean may draw one Han character with different stroke details. That is a font difference, not a different encoded character.
崯 and 崟 are documented variant forms, not just regional drawings of one form. 崯 places 山 beside 金; 崟 stacks 山 above 金.
A literary, descriptive mountain word; a standalone message needs context.

1Why does 崯 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
