What 嶂 means
It names a sheer peak pictured as a wall or screen.
Shen Yue, a Chinese poet, used 嶂 in a poem from the late fifth or early sixth century, ending “起青嶂” (“green peaks rise like a screen”). The Han-era dictionary Shuowen Jiezi has no entry; later Chinese dictionaries link it with 障.
In Mandarin, Pinyin gives zhàng (roughly “jahng,” with a falling tone); Cantonese Jyutping gives zoeng3; Japanese dictionaries list しょう (shō, long o) and みね (mi-ne).
A literary, landscape-specific word; alone in casual chat, it may sound formal or opaque.
障 means a barrier; 嶂 names a steep mountain face.
