Mountain Summit Character

4052/20992

巓 means “mountain summit” or “peak”; it is an uncommon written variant of 巔, found in literary or specialist contexts. Its history links the summit form to older scribal forms of 顛, and its appearance on screen depends on font coverage and locale.

What 巓 means

It means “mountain summit” or “peak.”

巓 is an uncommon written variant of 巔. Chinese dictionaries list it under 巔; Japanese dictionaries also record it for いただき, a Japanese word for a mountain top, and in compounds such as 山巓 and 絶巓. Older Chinese texts use 首陽之巓 (also written 首陽之巔) for Shouyang’s summit.

A study of handwritten Chinese documents from Dunhuang traces 巔 to scribal variants of 顛, a character associated with the top of the head. Adding the mountain sign 山 made the summit sense explicit.

Is 巓 the same as 巔?

They are two written forms of the same summit word.

巔 is the better-known traditional form; 巓 is an attested variant. In simplified Chinese, 巅 is the corresponding form.

Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fonts can draw CJK characters differently, and a font without this glyph may show a missing-glyph box. The display changes; the character’s Unicode identity does not.

Literary and specialist in feel; 巓 reads like a deliberate, old-fashioned variant.

In ordinary writing, 巓 may look like a typo; it is an attested variant of 巔.

Questions people ask

1

Why does 巓 look different or appear as a box?

It is a font-coverage issue. CJK fonts may draw locale-specific forms, and a font without 巓 can show a missing-glyph box; the character’s identity stays the same.
