What 川 means
川 means a river or stream.
Shang oracle-bone writing (marks carved on bones and shells) and Western Zhou bronze inscriptions show earlier watercourse forms that developed into 川. The Han-era dictionary Shuowen Jiezi describes it as connected flowing water.
Why does 川 mean Sichuan?
In 四川, 川 forms part of the name Sichuan.
One account links the name to four Song-era administrative divisions; another links it to rivers. “Four rivers” is not a settled etymology.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 川 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
