What 巢 means
A nest; compounds can extend it to a den or hideout.
Shang oracle-bone inscriptions—bones inscribed for divination—show 巢 as part of a larger character. A form used alone is recorded in the Western Zhou period. Its shape combines a nest with 木, the character for “tree.”
Later Chinese usage includes animal nests, nesting, simple tree shelters, and hideouts for enemies or bandits. The Chinese dictionary Shuowen contrasts a tree nest (巢) with one in a hole (窠).

3Questions people ask
1Why does 巢 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
