What 幍 means
幍 is a historical word for a cloth cap or head covering.
An account from the Wei period says Cao Cao's government, amid famine and scarce resources, cut fine silk into caps modeled on ancient leather headgear. They were practical military wear, not court dress, and colors marked rank. The account also relays a story—not a firm origin—that an official named Xun Wenruo's headcloth caught on a branch and formed a forked shape people kept.
By the Jin period, rules permitted certain officials riding in carriages to wear white 幍; ritual records also mention white headwear at mourning. One costume account treats 帢 as an equivalent name. Dictionaries also record 幍 as a cloth wrapper and, in separate entries, as a variant of 絛 (braided silk cord) and 㡊.
Should I use 幍 for an everyday hat?
Use 帽 for an everyday modern hat.
幍 belongs in historical descriptions, old texts, and dictionary entries. In casual chat, it can read as a deliberate archaism or as a reference to old costume.
How do I type 幍?
Use Mandarin pinyin input and select 幍 from its candidates.
Type tao without a tone mark. It may be a rare suggestion, so Cangjie (LBBHX) or Wubi (MHEV or MHEE) can be a more direct fallback. If 幍 appears as a box, the active font may not cover it.
Historical, lexicographic, and costume-specific; unusual in everyday chat.
For a modern hat, use 帽; 幍 reads as a choice of old-text wording.
