What 幞 means
At heart, 幞 means a cloth cover; 幞头 names historic headwear. An Eastern Han dictionary called Shuowen Jiezi glosses it as 帊, also meaning a cloth cover.
Traditional accounts place 幞头's formation in the Northern Zhou and explain its four projecting ends as a secure wrap for military movement. During the Tang, inner supports and stiffer tails turned the wrap into a structured cap worn in official and everyday dress. Museum scholarship cautions against a simple descent from the Han-era 幅巾, another cloth headwrap, and instead describes influence from Xianbei-style hats associated with the historical Xianbei people.
What does it mean if someone sends 幞?
Read it from the surrounding phrase. In costume history, 幞头 identifies the historical headwear; in a dictionary entry or quotation, 幞 may simply appear as the rare character or its variant 襆.
It reads as archaic or specialist, most at home in dictionary, historical, and costume writing.
For the headpiece, 幞头 is the specific term; 幞 alone does not identify a hat.
