What 庣 means
It names a place that is not full.
The Han Shu phrase 旁有庣焉 uses it for the hollow or unfilled margin beside the square inside a round capacity vessel. Classical dictionaries also gloss it as a 凹下的地方, a sunken place.
The earliest evidence located here is the Xin-Mang 嘉量 inscription, a standard bronze measure. Later glosses preserve a second reading, 过, “to exceed”; 𠩓 is a recorded variant, and 兆 supplies the phonetic side. Use the vessel reading unless context points elsewhere.
Classical metrology; expect it in old texts, dictionaries, and specialist history.
Do not use it as a casual synonym for “empty.”
