What 廊 means
A covered way runs beside or connects buildings.
Older Chinese 廊 bordered a main hall, offering shelter and a link. 走廊 is a corridor, 回廊 an encircling passage, and 画廊 an art gallery; Japanese uses 廊下 for an everyday hallway.
Japanese 廊下 appears by the late 14th century and became common in the 15th century.
Architectural; standalone 廊 sounds formal beside Japanese 廊下.
For an ordinary Japanese hallway, use 廊下.

3Questions people ask
1Why does 廊 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
