What 廪 means
In Chinese, 廪 means a granary or the provisions stored there.
㐭 appears in oracle-bone examples—early inscriptions on animal bones and turtle shells—and 廩 appears in bronze inscriptions from the early Western Zhou dynasty. The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, records 廩 as a form of 㐭. These stores held grain for rations and ancestral rites. Compounds carry the meaning from the granary in 仓廪 to provisions and public support in 廪生.
Literary and historical in Chinese; it evokes official stores and provisions.
Do not read 廪生 as the generic modern word for “student.”
