Traditional Chinese character 廳

A room, venue, or government office; its compound narrows the meaning. In a compound, the word before 廳 names its function: 客廳 is a living room, 音樂廳 a concert hall, and 教育廳 a government education department.

廳’s history reaches back to oracle-bone and bronze records: an early ancestor paired a house marker with a sound element later associated with 聽, while bronze forms used 广, another building marker. These forms were read as 庭, so they show ancestry, not proof that 廳 already meant “hall.” The exact later character is absent from Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary. Later lexicons connect 廳 with 聽事, a place where an official heard cases. In the Qing, 廳 also named a local administrative district under a prefecture.

廳, 厅, and 庁 follow different writing standards

These forms belong to different writing standards.

廳 is the traditional Chinese form; mainland simplified Chinese uses 厅. In current Japanese, government-office names use 庁, and 廳 is its old form. Use the form required by the surrounding language and script standard.

Regional CJK fonts may draw the same character with different stroke or component shapes. If 廳 looks different on another device, check the font or locale settings before treating it as another written form.
