Poems 古詩十九首 use 彷徨 for pacing; the philosophical text 莊子 for roaming; writer 揚雄 uses 徨徨 for inner unrest. The Book of Songs (詩經) uses 彷徨 before the history 魏書 records variant 徬徨; 旁皇 and 傍偟 are other spellings. A Taiwanese dictionary records 徨 through 彷徨 in 玉篇, not 說文 (as of 2024).
