What 忧 means
It meant worry; older uses also included grief. In classical Chinese, 忧 could name worry, illness, or mourning after a parent's death. Shang and Western Zhou, early Chinese dynasties, leave a layered record: a Shang divination graph (a written sign used to seek guidance) is interpreted as worry-related; Western Zhou bronze inscriptions use 憂 for worry. One reading sees worry on a face in the older form 𢝊; later texts used 憂 for that sense, and 𢝊 faded.
In 1956, 忧 became the simplified form corresponding to traditional 憂. Chinese mainly uses 忧 in compounds: 忧愁, sorrowful worry; 忧虑, anxious thought; 后顾之忧, worry about trouble ahead.
