What 忯 means
Mandarin qí 忯 means “love”; classical dictionaries also record “respect.” The earliest surviving witness is a line in the Erya, a Chinese glossary compiled from the late Warring States into early Han. It pairs 忯忯 with 惕惕, glossed “love.”
Shuowen Jiezi, a character dictionary completed around 100 CE, parses 忯 as 心 (“heart/mind”) plus 氏 (the sound element). The Yupian dictionary records “respect” in 543 CE.

Questions people ask
1Why do Japanese TV subtitles show 忯 as jagged?
A fallback glyph. In 2024, NHK said ordinary terrestrial and BS subtitle broadcasts substituted a rough glyph for 忯 because it fell outside their JIS support tier; BS Premium 4K and BS8K rendered it smoothly.
