Character 怂

In casual Chinese, it marks someone as timid, cowardly, or backing down.

The earliest evidence located here is the Han-era Shuowen Jiezi entry for 慫, defined as “startled.” No one-off inventor is attested in the sources checked; it is a phono-semantic character, with 從 for sound and 心 for inner state.

Why does 怂 also appear in 怂恿?

In 怂恿, it means to egg someone on or incite them.

Older dictionary evidence preserves both paths: fear or alarm, and urging another person on. So 怂恿 pushes someone into action, while lone 怂 judges nerve.

The traditional 慫 and simplified 怂 are the same character. Notes connect 慫 with 悚 and 竦 by sound in the 從 series, a structural link — not a claim that 從 means coward.

What does 怂 mean when someone sends it?

Treat it as teasing or criticism about nerve, not praise.

“你太怂了” says “you’re such a chicken.” “我怂了” admits retreat; “别怂” dares someone not to back out. Playful between friends, it still stings from a stranger, elder, or boss.

A formal or traditional reader may expect fear or inciting senses. A colloquial Beijing-Mandarin reader hears the coward label at once. For neutral wording use 害怕 for “afraid” or 胆小 for “timid.”
