Respectful third-person pronoun

4666/20992

怹 is a respectful way to say “he” or “she,” especially in Beijing speech. It refers to an elder, teacher, superior, or other honored person; it is a regional alternative to ordinary written 他 or 她, not a general pronoun. Its written form has several proposed explanations, including an analogy with 您, the respectful “you.”

What 怹 means

怹 is a respectful third-person pronoun in Beijing speech.

Beijing speech is a local form of Mandarin. 怹 refers to an elder, teacher, superior, or another honored person; some suburban Beijing speakers also use it for a group. A Cantonese dictionary entry also lists 怹 with a reading used like 他, the ordinary “he”; it does not carry Beijing’s honorific force there.

A 2025 Beijing-language account traces the tān reading to the late-Qing novel 《小额》 and a newspaper serialization from 1925–1929. Proposed explanations for the written form include shortening 他每 or 他老, or shaping it by analogy with 您, the respectful “you.”

What does it mean when someone sends 怹?

They are showing respect for the person they mention.

A Beijing-flavored message may use 怹 for a parent, elder, teacher, or other respected person; a quotation or tribute may preserve that local voice. If you do not know the dialect, the respect can pass unnoticed.

Use 怹 when you want the Beijing honorific

Choose it for Beijing-dialect dialogue, a quotation, or a deliberate old-Beijing voice. For neutral Mandarin, 他 or 她 is clearer; 他老人家 makes the respect explicit. 怹 is a social signal, not a neutral substitute in every sentence.

Marked and respectful: it sounds Beijing-local or deliberately invokes that voice, not neutral written Mandarin.

Outside Beijing-aware contexts, the honorific may be missed; 他老人家 makes the respect clearer.

Drift: As of 2025, Beijing-language coverage still describes 怹 as a living etiquette form, while also noting its decline and survival in respectful speech and literary voice.

Can 怹 refer to a woman?

Yes. In its Beijing honorific use, 怹 can refer to a respected woman as well as a man; the surrounding context supplies the gender.
