What 惟 means
It can mean “think,” “only,” or a classical Chinese particle. Its basic written sense is thinking or considering. Traditional character analysis connects the heart component 忄, a side form of 心, with 隹, treated as the sound element. In Classical Chinese—the older written language—惟 can also mean “only” or “but,” stand for “be” or “have,” or open a clause without a direct English translation. The sentence tells you which job it has.
The earliest form shown in glyph-history records is a bronze inscription from the late Shang or early Western Zhou. Bronze inscriptions are writing on bronze objects. Later script forms lead toward 惟 today, showing a character shape that developed through an evolving writing tradition.
Why do people confuse 惟 with 唯?
They share some older uses, but modern Chinese often distinguishes them. 惟 and 唯 overlap in some classical forms. In many modern Chinese compounds meaning “only,” 唯 is the ordinary spelling; 惟 remains in inherited or literary forms such as 惟妙惟肖 and 不惟. As of 2025, language guidance recommended 唯有 over 惟有 for the common “only” phrase.
Japanese also uses 惟 in names and literary words. Japanese readings include い (i), ゆい (yui), おもう (omou, “think”), これ (kore, “this”), and ただ (tada, “only”). These readings belong to Japanese usage, not to Mandarin pronunciation.
In modern Chinese, 惟 looks formal or inherited where 唯 is the everyday spelling.
For everyday Chinese “only,” use 唯 unless preserving a quoted or fixed spelling.
