What 惰 means
惰 names slackness, neglect, or inertia. The oldest source cited by the consulted character dictionaries is the Shuowen tradition: its form 憜 glosses “not respectful,” a conduct judgment rather than a picture of sleep; 惰 is recorded as a shortened form.
Later examples widen the judgment: a Pan Geng quotation uses 惰 for a farmer who settles into idleness, while Mozi uses it for decline. Modern Chinese and Japanese keep the lazy and neglectful sense, but 惰性 describes continuing by habit or inertia.
Negative and evaluative: it judges conduct or describes momentum that has gone slack.
Do not use it for “I’m resting”; it points toward neglect or inertia.

Questions people ask
1Why does 惰 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
