CJK Unified Ideograph-65A2

斢 has two attested readings: tǒu for an old yellow-and-ritual sense, and tiǎo for “exchange” in some Chinese dialects. In a modern message, the dialect reading is the practical one only when the surrounding language points that way; otherwise 斢 is a specialist character, not an emoji. Its older yellow sense connects it to 黈纩, the ruler’s yellow ear pendants meant to signal refusal of reckless speech.

What 斢 means

It means yellow historically, or exchange in some dialects.

The tǒu reading points to the old yellow word 黈: yellow-wadding pendants hung beside a ruler’s ears, a courtly reminder not to heed reckless talk. The tiǎo reading is a dialect verb for exchanging or swapping. Pronunciation and surrounding language choose between them; the bare glyph does not.

The 2024 Taiwan Ministry of Education record says 斢 is absent from Shuowen. It links 斢 to 黈 and lists 𪏡 and 紏 as variant forms. The oldest named dictionary tradition attached to the form is the Liang-era Yupian, compiled around 543; later witnesses include the Liao Longkan Shoujian (997) and Northern Song Guangyun (1007–1008). No single inventor is supported: the trail is lexicographic recording followed by regional use.

Does 斢 mean exchange in a dialect?

Yes—tiǎo means “exchange” in documented dialect use.

A 2020 Yiyang dialect column records 斢 for exchanging money, swapping jobs, and taking turns, including the expressions 斢打搞 and 打斢. That is a regional speech convention, not a default reading for every Chinese reader.

Guangyun also records 斢㪹, glossed as “soldiers seize people or things.” That pair is historical dictionary material, not a modern chat combo.

Is 斢 an emoji?

No; it is a typed character drawn by your font.

A missing box or fallback glyph is a font-coverage problem, not an alternate emoji meaning. The font decides whether this rare character displays cleanly.

Regional or historical: it signals dialect writing or a classical reference, not generic decoration.

Do not assume yellow; in dialect writing, 斢 can mean exchange.

Why does 斢 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
