What 斻 means
斻 is a historical variant of 航 linked to boats joined together. The early Chinese character dictionary Shuowen Jiezi (《说文解字》) gives the related form 𣃚 the gloss 方舟, meaning boats joined side by side. Related forms built around 舟, the Chinese character for boat, appear on bronze inscriptions from the Zhou period. Joined boats could carry people and goods together or form a floating bridge.
In 2024, 斻 was catalogued as a variant of the commonly used form 航. As of 2026, a rare Han character can appear with different regional designs in Chinese- and Japanese-language fonts; that is a font difference, not a change to the encoded character.
Historical variant with an archival feel; ordinary modern Chinese writing uses 航.
Use 航 for ordinary writing; keep 斻 when preserving a historical form.

1Why does 斻 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
