What 暼 means
It primarily names the sun sinking at sunset. Chinese dictionaries gloss the reduplicated form as the appearance of sunset. The shape is semantic-phonetic: 日 marks the sun meaning, while 敝 supplies the sound. Its job was to write that sunset description.
Taiwan's Ministry of Education 2024 entry marks 說文 as not recording 暼. The earliest record of 暼 I could verify is the Song-era Guangyun, compiled in 1007–1008, part of an evolving dictionary tradition with no single inventor. A Japanese kanji reference keeps the sunset sense, while one Japanese corpus records 一暼 for a fleeting glance. For the everyday word, 瞥 is the safe choice.
Literary and lexicographic; outside a quotation it reads as a deliberate classical reference.
Use 瞥 for a fleeting glance; 暼's 日 radical points to sunset.

1Why does 暼 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
