What 月 means
Moon or month; the surrounding words decide. It began as a crescent-moon pictograph in oracle-bone script, the early Chinese writing carved on bones and shells. Chinese reads it yuè. Japanese reads it tsuki for the moon, gatsu in month names like 一月 (January), and getsu in 一か月 (one month).
Why is 月 in body-part kanji?
That component usually means flesh, not moon. 肉, “flesh,” shrank into a side form that looks like 月; Japanese calls it nikuzuki. In 脳 (brain) or 腕 (arm), read the whole kanji, not the sky.
