What 枞 means
Fir tree; place names read it differently.
Shuowen Jiezi (dictionary) and Erya (glossary) describe 樅 as a fir with pine-like leaves and a cypress-like trunk. Erya says its wood made temple beams. Later texts mention coffin wood, a ritual ornament in the Shijing poetry collection, drum beaters, and a surname.

1Why does 枞 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
