Character 枪

It can mean either; the phrase around it decides. 枪, pronounced qiang, is a Chinese character for a long thrusting weapon. Its recognisable old forms appear on Qin and Western Han wooden slips, and an old dictionary explains traditional 槍 as a pointed weapon with wood, 木, for meaning and 倉 for sound.

A later weapon change stretched the word into the Song period. Gunpowder tubes mounted on spears were called fire-lances, so the same spear word came to cover flame-throwers and, later, guns and rifles.

Why does 枪 become 槍 in some Chinese text?

It is a script change, not a new weapon. 枪 is the simplified Chinese writing of 槍, used in mainland China and Singapore; 槍 is the traditional writing used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and older books. 鎗 is another recorded variant of the same word.

Japanese 槍 works differently: it is read やり or ソウ and means spear or lance, as in 槍術, spear fighting, and 竹槍, bamboo spear. So read 槍 as spear in Japanese, but check the compound in Chinese.

What does 枪 mean in a message?

Read the whole phrase before choosing gun or spear. Alone, 枪 is just a weapon word. 火枪 and 步枪 mean firearms, martial-arts or costume-drama talk means the old spear, and 焊枪 or 烟枪 mean gun-shaped tools such as a welding gun or opium pipe.
