What does 枿 mean?
A felled tree’s stump—or the new shoot that grows from it.
In the Shangshu (Classic of Documents) passage about King Pan Geng’s move to Yin, 若顛木之有由蘖 compares a fallen tree’s regrowth with political renewal after relocation. The wording 由蘖 is debated: the Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, glosses 㽕 as new branches growing from a tree; one textual study suggests the surviving text’s 由 may be a copying error for 甾, another regrowth term.
The Shuowen Jiezi quotes the phrase as 㽕𣡌, defines 𣡌 as the wood left after felling, and records 櫱 as another form. The Erya, another classical dictionary, identifies 枿 as a regional word for that remnant in the old states of Chen and Zheng. Zhang Heng also uses 槎枿 for cut-tree remains in his Xijing fu, a poem-like work about the Western Capital. Dictionaries group 枿 with 櫱 and 蘖.
Classical and dictionary register; one old passage gives the tree’s regrowth a political meaning.
Alone, 枿 does not tell you whether the writer means the stump or its new shoot.

Questions people ask
1Why does 枿 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
