What 柲 means
It means an ancient weapon’s handle or shaft. In Chinese, 柲 is a classical word for the grip of weapons such as a 戈, a dagger-axe, or a 戟, a halberd. It can also mean an object’s handle.
An early form appears in oracle-bone inscriptions—ancient Chinese writing carved on animal bones or turtle shells—as a weapon handle. Inscriptions on bronze objects also used 必 for that sense; after 必 was borrowed to mean “must,” writers added 木, the wood component, to distinguish 柲 and restore the handle meaning. One description gives the shaft a wooden core wrapped in bamboo strips, bound with fiber, and lacquered to make it tough and resilient. Later dictionaries also record 柲 for a bamboo strip that protects a bow.

How do you pronounce 柲?
In Mandarin it sounds roughly like “bee” with a sharp drop in pitch. Pinyin writes it bì. Historical dictionaries record other readings too, but this is the Mandarin reading for the weapon-handle sense.
