Character 校

It can mean school, text checking, or part of a military term.

In Mandarin, 学校 means school; 校对 and 校正 refer to proofreading and correction. Japanese 学校 also means school, while 校正 and 校閲 are editorial terms, and 校合 means collation. Chinese 上校 is a military rank; Japanese 将校 means military officers.

Where did 校 come from?

Its written history is old; its ultimate origin remains unsettled.

An indexed bronze-script form appears on the late Western Zhou vessel 焂戒鼎. It is an early witness, not a secure first attestation or proof of what 校 meant there. A Western Zhou account uses 校 to compare and correct older Shang hymns. By the Han dynasty, 校 also named local schools that combined teaching, archery practice, and public discussion.

The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese dictionary, explains 校 as 木囚 (“wooden restraint”) and analyzes 交 as its sound element beside 木 (“wood”). This is an old explanation, not proof of the character’s origin. The historical variant 挍 uses the hand component 扌 instead of 校’s wood component 木. Later editorial terms 校雠 and 校勘 name ways of comparing copies and assessing corrections.

How do you read 校 in Chinese and Japanese?

Read the whole word; 校 has more than one reading.

In Mandarin, 校 is xiào in 学校 and jiào in 校对 or 校正; these are Pinyin spellings of distinct readings. In Japanese, 学校 is gakkō; 校 is read kō in 校正 and 校閲, but kyō in 校合. A character’s reading inside a compound does not always match the pronunciation of the full word.

If a message contains only 校, ask for its language and the rest of the word before translating. Otherwise, a school reading can turn a request to check text into a reply about education.
