楲 is a rare Han character with two historical tracks: Chinese dictionaries tie it to 楲窬, a private sanitary vessel, while Japanese sources use it for a buried box-shaped sluice. Sent alone, read it as a context-dependent historical character, not a modern reaction. In poetry it can also echo 言ひ, “saying.”

Text symbol

What 楲 means

It names a sanitary vessel in Chinese and a sluice in Japanese. The Han-period dictionary Shuowen Jiezi defines the compound 楲窬 as 褻器, a private sanitary implement, and analyzes 楲 as 木 plus 威, with 木 marking a wooden object and 威 supplying the sound.

The record names no inventor; it records equipment vocabulary. A later Yupian tradition adds dam-control timber. In Japan, the Wamyō Ruijushō, compiled around 934, lists 楲 both as a sanitary vessel and in a water section where it is opened to release pond water. Japanese dictionaries describe a buried box-shaped sluice regulating flow.

Why can 楲 mean a vessel or a sluice?

The sources preserve two technical senses. 楲窬 belongs with 褻器 and 虎子, the old sanitation vocabulary. The water sense belongs with 決塘, opening a pond bank, and 陂竇, the pond-channel system. The link is shared writing across trades, not one picture.

威 gives the sound, not the sense of power. 木 places it among wooden implements. So the same character labels different wooden equipment in different traditions.

What does 楲 mean when someone sends it?

Context decides; 楲 alone is not a modern chat signal. Beside a classical Chinese quotation, start with the sanitary-vessel sense. Beside a Japanese irrigation passage, start with the sluice sense; in classical Japanese waka the sound can also pun with 言ひ, “saying.”

If 楲 arrives by itself, ask for the source or language. The glyph alone cannot tell you which literary tradition the sender means.

Historical, technical, and lexicographic; learned and archival, not casual chat tone.

Without context, readers may choose the toilet sense when you meant a sluice.
