Chinese character 楻

7036/20992

楻 is a rare Chinese character recorded as a boat-sense variant of 艎 and used in older technical terms. Its boat-related history includes a royal-vessel name, while a 1637 craft book uses it for papermaking and roofing terms.

What 楻 means

It is a boat-related variant of 艎 and appears in old technical terms.

Chinese boat dictionaries list 楻 as a variant of 艎. The compound 艅艎, also written 馀皇 or 余皇, appears in the Zuo Zhuan, a Chinese historical chronicle, in a Wu–Chu battle account dated 525 BCE, where it names a captured royal vessel. That date belongs to the related word tradition, not to this exact form.

The 1637 technical book Tiangong Kaiwu (天工开物) uses 楻桶 for a vessel or cover used to boil bamboo for papermaking and 楻板砖 for a brick laid under roof tiles.

How do you pronounce 楻?

Mandarin dictionaries give huáng and héng.

These are Mandarin pinyin spellings, and the marks indicate tones. Dictionaries linking 楻 to 艎 give huáng; Taiwan’s Ministry of Education variant dictionary also records héng, following a reading cited in the Kangxi Dictionary. For a historical quotation, follow the source’s reading.

A specimen dated 2026-09-10 shows Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Hong Kong typefaces drawing 楻 differently. A font without the character may show a fallback box or substitute; that changes its appearance, not the text character.

What if someone sends 楻 alone?

Ask what they meant; it has no established stand-alone reaction reading.

As of 2026-09-10, no documented messaging convention assigns 楻 a mood by itself. It may be a quotation, a name, or an accidental character selection; ask for the surrounding text before reading a tone into it.

Uncommon and scholarly in tone; it fits historical discussion or a transcription that follows its source.

A lone 楻 does not reliably mean “boat” or any mood; ask for the line it came from.

Why does 楻 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
