What 楿 means
It names the Japanese katsura tree. 楿 is a Japanese kokuji—a kanji made in Japan—built from 木 (“wood”) and 香 (“fragrance”) to write かつら as a fragrant tree.
A Japanese plant-history compilation cites the old dictionary 字鏡, dated around 898–901, with the spelling 楿加豆良; it groups the entry with 香木, 桂, and 楓. This places 楿 in an older Japanese writing tradition, not a Unicode-era invention.
Today 楿 is a specialist or stylized spelling, also used in Taiwanese branding; everyday Japanese normally uses 桂 for the katsura tree. Chinese references also use 桂 for cassia and sweet osmanthus, so the characters’ meanings do not match in every language.
A specialized Japanese spelling that also appears in stylized Taiwanese branding.
For the ordinary Japanese spelling of the tree, use 桂.
