Enoki tree character

7055/20992

榎 is a Japanese kanji, or Chinese-derived character, for the enoki tree, a type of hackberry. In Japanese names it may be read differently; Chinese references give it another reading and tree sense. The tree name appears in early Japanese writing and later in roadside markers and family names.

What 榎 means

In Japanese, 榎 is the character for the enoki tree, a type of hackberry.

The tree name predates digital text: the Nihon Shoki, an early Japanese chronicle, records it in 720; the Man’yōshū, a poetry collection completed after 759, preserves the shorter name え in a poem about birds eating its fruit. Around 934, the Wamyōshō dictionary records 榎 with a form of えのき.

Japanese dictionaries also use 榎 for the tree names ひさぎ and きささげ. In Mandarin, dictionaries give it the reading jiǎ, with a low-rising third tone, and a separate tree sense. The same character can therefore point to different readings and plants across Japanese and Chinese text.

Why does 榎 appear in place names?

It can preserve the memory of a tree used as a landmark.

Enoki trees were planted at ichirizuka—roadside mounds marking distance in ri, an old Japanese unit. Major-road building in 1604 made the practice especially visible; the trees also gave travelers shade.

In historical Japanese folk practice, 榎 marked village boundaries and bridge approaches, and some communities treated it as sacred. The name 縁切り榎 refers to an enoki tied to relationship-ending customs; a tree character in a family or place name does not prove that exact history.

How is 榎 read in names?

The ordinary Japanese tree reading is えのき; names can differ.

Japanese name references list えのき (enoki) and えき (eki) for surnames, and えの (eno) for place names. Biology often writes the tree as エノキ in katakana, while 榎 turns up in historical or proper-name contexts.

榎本 is a surname read えのもと, not a mechanical reading of each character on its own. A compound can have its own reading, so ask for the stated reading of a person's or place's name.

A botanical, historical, and proper-name kanji; Japanese biology often writes the tree as エノキ.

In a name, don't assume えのき; check its stated reading.
