What 榿 means

Its name survives in an old Chinese text and Tang poetry. The old Chinese text Shanhaijing names a tree 機木; later commentary connects it with 榿. By the Tang dynasty, the poet Du Fu wrote about 榿木 and 榿林 in connection with plantings in Sichuan.

Japanese reference works describe planting 榿 along field edges for fuel. The tree grew quickly, provided shade, and its fallen leaves enriched fields.

A botanical character with a literary record.
