Chinese character 槬

7149/20992

槬 is the old Chinese word for the too-wide side of a bell. A box on screen may mean your font lacks the character.

Text symbol

What 槬 means

It marks the oversized side of a bell’s proportions.

One early textual attestation appears in the Zuo Zhuan, a classical Chinese chronicle, in an episode set in 521 BCE. King Jing of Zhou prepares a ritual bell called 無射; a musician warns that poor proportions will spoil its sound.

槬 and 摦 are distinct characters, though Chinese dictionaries connect them. Here, 槬 marks the oversized side and 窕 the too-small opposite.

Archaic and specialist: it names one side of a classical bell-proportion contrast.

Alone, it needs a gloss.
