Daimyo oak

7155/20992

槲 names the daimyo oak and its broad leaves in Chinese. It appears in regional names for foods wrapped in those leaves. In Japanese, the same tree is usually written 柏 (kashiwa), so 槲 is a less common spelling there.

Text symbol

What 槲 means

It names the daimyo oak and its leaves.

In Mandarin, 槲 is hú, the name for the broad-leaved oak also called the daimyo oak. It can refer to the tree, its leaves, or food wrapped in them.

Alone, it reads as a plant name, a literary reference, or a question about a rare character. In a food name, the surrounding words identify the dish.

槲 vs 柏: which one is kashiwa?

In Japanese, both can name kashiwa; 柏 is the usual spelling.

Japanese dictionaries also record 槲 as kashiwa and 檞 as another written form. In Chinese, 槲 names this oak, while 柏 usually names a different evergreen tree; the characters are not interchangeable across languages.

The spoken Japanese word かしわ can also mean chicken in regional food usage. That homophone does not change the plant meaning of the written character 槲.

Why is 槲 connected to food?

Oak leaves appear in both burial offerings and festival foods.

A Warring States Chu tomb dated around 339–329 BCE held rice and millet wrapped in oak leaves as burial offerings. The Longkan Shoujian, a Chinese character dictionary, records 槲 in 997; the Shuowen dictionary does not list it.

Later regional foods include 槲包 and 槲叶粽, which keep the leaf-wrapping link in festival cooking. Japan's 柏餅 is a related leaf-wrapped sweet, using the more usual Japanese spelling 柏.

A learned plant character; alone, it reads like a name or reference, not a casual reaction.

In Chinese, 柏 usually names a different tree; the Japanese kashiwa reading does not make 槲 and 柏 interchangeable.

Why does 槲 look different in some fonts?

It can. Fonts for Chinese, Japanese, and Korean may draw the same encoded character with locale-specific shapes. A difference in strokes usually comes from the selected font, not a different character.
