What 檍 means
A rare tree-name character with no settled species.
Chinese lexicons link 檍 with 杻 and the older form 𣚍; the Zhouli, a Chinese ritual text, describes its hard wood for bows. The Wamyō Ruijushō, an early Japanese dictionary, glosses it as 阿波岐 and links it to 橿木. Its earliest Japanese dictionary citation for あわき (Awaki, roughly ah-wah-kee) is c. 934. Two early chronicles spell the mythic place differently: the Kojiki has 阿波岐原, while the Nihon Shoki has 檍原, read Awakihara (roughly ah-wah-kee-hah-rah). As of 2026, Miyazaki school and district names read it あおき.
Rare; chiefly a tree term and a historical or local name.
檍 vs 青木: あおき is a reading, not proof the spellings are interchangeable.

Questions people ask
1Why does 檍 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
