Next / sequence character

7458/20992

次 points to what comes next, an occurrence, or rank, depending on the language and phrase. Japanese 次 usually means “next”; in Mandarin Chinese, 次 can count how many times an action happens and mark sequence. In Chinese compounds like 次要 and 次品, it can mean secondary or lower-grade.

Text symbol

What 次 means

Its meaning depends on language and position: next, occurrence, or secondary.

In Mandarin Chinese, 次 (cì; roughly starts like “ts” in “tsunami,” with a short vowel and falling tone) after a number counts occurrences: 一次 means “one time.” 上次 means “last time,” and 下次 means “next time.” In 次要 and 次品, it means secondary or lower-grade, so translating it as “next” misreads the compound.

If someone sends 次 alone, check the surrounding phrase and whether the exchange is in Chinese or Japanese. In Japanese, “next” is a straightforward reading; without that context, ask what they mean instead of treating the character as a complete reaction.

How does Japanese use 次?

次の modifies a noun as “next”; 次は introduces what comes next.

The standalone Japanese reading is つぎ (tsugi, roughly “tsoo-gee”). With a noun, 次の means “the next …”; 次は introduces the next item or turn. 次々 means “one after another”: the repetition marks succession.

Where did 次 come from?

Its written history is ancient, but its earliest explanation is unsettled.

Early forms are recorded on oracle bones (bones inscribed for divination) and on bronzes from the Western Zhou dynasty. Later forms appear in manuscripts from China’s Warring States period and Qin dynasty, as well as seal script, an older formal writing style.

One traditional Japanese kanji analysis gives 次 an older sense of stopping to rest or lodging, then says it was borrowed to express succession and order. This is one account of how its meanings developed, not its modern meaning in every phrase.
