What 殢 means
Read 殢 as lingering, clinging, or indulging in its object.
An older dictionary gloss preserves “extremely exhausted.” The earliest concrete examples surfaced here are Tang period poems: 殢長安 is lingering in Chang’an, 殢著春風 is clinging to spring wind, and 殢酒 is indulgence in wine. As of 2026, no source reviewed here establishes a pre-Tang manuscript or inscription first attestation. Its construction is phonetic-semantic: 歹 is the meaning component and 帶 the sound component, not a picture with a known inventor.
By the Song period, 殢雲尤雨 uses the character in a euphemism for intimate love. Later dictionary examples preserve the related senses “linger,” “entangle,” and “indulge.” The related form 𣨼 is listed as simplified, while 帶 places 殢 in a sound series that includes 滯; that historical relationship does not make the two interchangeable.
How do I type 殢?
Use pinyin tì, then select 殢; Cangjie is more exact.
The catch is selection: tì shares its syllable with many candidates in a Chinese IME. The CUHK database lists Cangjie 一弓大心月 (MNKPB).
Literary and rare; it signals classical Chinese more than ordinary chat.
In 殢雲尤雨, it is an intimacy euphemism, not a neutral weather phrase.

1Why does 殢 look different in another font?
It can. As of 2026, Taiwan's CNS11643 database says Windows 10 and later include a default glyph; a box or fallback means font coverage is missing, not that the meaning changed.
