What 每 means
It marks a set. Put 每 before a unit word and noun. 每…都 covers the set; 各 emphasizes individual members.
China’s late Shang oracle-bone texts (around 1300–1050 BCE) record questions and events on animal bones and turtle shells. Early forms show a hairpinned woman linked to 女; some scholars link 每 to 母. Oracle texts also use it for 母 and 悔 (“regret”). Bronze texts use it in names and for “swift,” later written 敏. A Warring States inscription has 百每, read as 百牧 (“all ministers”) or 百謀 (“many plans”). Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary, glossed it as lush grass.

1Why does 每 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
