What 沊 means
It is a rare Chinese character for a water sound, usually written 沊沊. Dictionaries define 沊沊 as water noise; Cantonese entries also use single 沊 for the “plop” when someone or something falls into water.
The earliest known dictionary record is in 集韻, a Song-dynasty rhyme dictionary completed in 1039; it defines 沊沊 as a sound of water. The Taiwan Ministry of Education’s 2024 entry notes that the earlier character dictionary 說文解字 does not list 沊.
Later dictionary discussion groups 沊沊 with repeated forms such as 潭潭, 湛湛 and 碪碪, and links 沊 with 沈 as a neighboring sound-word spelling. That is a lexicographic connection, not a reason to substitute 沊 for 沈 or 沉 in ordinary writing.
Is 沊 something people send in chat?
Use it in a message only when the dialect or literary cue is clear.
Cantonese examples give single 沊 a local “plop” reading. A 2007 dictionary includes 沊一聲跳咗入游泳池 for someone jumping into a pool; a 1996 entry gives 跌落水沊聲 for the sound of something falling into water.
These examples make sense with their Cantonese or literary cues. In a mixed-audience message, a reader may not read lone 沊 as a splash. Use doubled 沊沊 for the dictionary water sound when that is the meaning you want.
Rare and specialized; doubled 沊沊 is the dictionary water sound, while lone 沊 needs a Cantonese or literary cue.
Alone, 沊 may be mistaken for 沈 or 沉, or go unread.

1Why does 沊 show as a box?
No. A box usually means the active font lacks this rare character. In 2026, a Jyutping Windows guide warned that bundled fonts may not display less-common CJK characters completely; use a font that includes it.
