What 洡 means
It means “to soak or stain” and also appears in place names.
Chinese dictionaries list two Mandarin readings: one for the place-name use and another for the verb. In 洡阴 and 洡水, the surrounding characters mark historical names; these are not examples of the verb.
How did 洡 enter place names?
A Sui-era county was named 洡阴 from 589–621.
The county had earlier been called 耒阳县; its name later returned to 耒阳. The variant spelling 洡阳 and the river-name form 洡水 are also recorded in the region.
The Shuowen Jiezi, an early Chinese character dictionary, records 䣂 for the county; later dictionaries connect it with 洡. In 洡, 氵 is the water component, while 耒 is the sound-related component.
How do I type 洡?
Use a Mandarin Pinyin input method or the Cangjie code EQD.
On a Mandarin Pinyin input method, enter lěi or lèi and choose 洡 from the candidates. Cangjie uses EQD, with the component breakdown 水手木; for Wubi, try IDIY or IFSY depending on the layout. Cantonese Jyutping input lists leoi6.
A specialized written character found in dictionary entries and historical place names.
Sound alone can mislead: “tears” is written 泪 in Simplified Chinese or 淚 in Traditional Chinese, not 洡.

Questions people ask
2Why does 洡 show as a box?
It can. A missing-glyph box usually means the active font cannot display 洡; try a font that includes this character.
Does 洡 mean tears?
No. One of 洡’s Mandarin readings sounds like the word for tears, but that word is written 泪 in Simplified Chinese or 淚 in Traditional Chinese; 洡 has separate meanings.
