What 洹 means
It names a particular river and appears in one Buddhist term.
Late Shang oracle-bone inscriptions—divination records carved on bones and shells—use 洹水 and 洹泉 for the river beside Yin, the Shang royal settlement; the questions ask whether floods would harm the settlement. The river’s water also fed settlement channels.
Later records use the river name in accounts of alliances and battles, and in county names. Dictionaries list variant forms of 洹: 𣵨 and 𣷻. The doubled form 洹洹 is also recorded with the sense “flowing.”
Geographic and historical in river names, with a fixed Buddhist use.
Alone, it does not tell you whether the river or Buddhist term is meant.
