Chinese character 济

Read 济 through the word it joins. In 经济 it belongs to “economy”; in 救济, “relief”; in 济南, it is part of a place name.

The Han-era Shuowen, an early Chinese dictionary, records 濟 as a river name. It analyzes the character with 水, the water component, and 齊 as the sound-bearing component. This records an early account of the older form, not when today's simplified 济 first appeared.

Classical Chinese uses of 濟 also include crossing, aiding, and rescuing. In the late Qing dynasty, China's last imperial dynasty, 经济 acquired its modern economics sense through Japanese translation, alongside an older sense of governing and helping the people. That later meaning belongs to the compound, not every use of 济.

Which form of 济 should I use?

济 is used in simplified Chinese, 濟 is its traditional Chinese counterpart, and 済 is the Japanese shinjitai form. These are related standard forms, not optional font styles. A font may draw details of a Han character differently without changing the encoded character; choosing one of these forms changes the text itself.
