Text symbol

What 涍 means

It is used in water and spring names.

The early Chinese dictionary Shuowen Jiezi does not record 涍. Jiyun lists it as a water name in Nanjun, a historical district. An expanded Yupian dictionary, first compiled around 543, also preserves 涍; that date does not establish the character's origin.

Yuan Jie's Tang dynasty inscription names the spring 涍泉 and urges children to honor their parents. Ming sources record 涍 in surnames and personal names. 氵 marks water; 孝 gives 涍 its sound.

Its attested uses are names; a standalone appearance gives little context.

Why does 涍 show as a box on some devices?

Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
