What 涢 means
It names the 涢水 river in Hubei. 涢 marks one particular waterway in Chinese geographic names; it is not a general word for water.
The early Chinese character dictionary 说文解字 records a river running east from Caiyang into the Xia River. The later geographical work 水经注 traces it from south of Dahong Mountain through Suizhou and Anlu. A Hubei government notice dated 2026-09-07 identifies its present name as 府河.
Why do older sources use 溳?
溳 is the traditional form paired with 涢. A source using traditional characters or an older reference may show 溳 instead. It names the same river character, not a second river.
The name also appears in 涢山, a mountain name linked to the river's source, and 溳州, a former administrative name.
Geographic and historical; expect 涢 in Hubei place names or older accounts, not casual prose.
Do not treat it as a general word for water.

Questions people ask
1Why does 涢 show as a box on some devices?
Because that device's fonts have no glyph for it. The character is still correct and still copies correctly — the box is a missing glyph, not a broken character.
